SAND
Sand is the most widely used resource after fresh water. We are rapidly running out of it.
When evaluating my ceramic practice, I wasn’t aware of the negative impact it has on the environment before the materials even got to my hands. The mining of raw materials is destroying our planet and I wanted to explore how to reduce this, starting with ceramic glazes. In this project instead of buying raw materials to make glazes, I have sourced industrial waste which would otherwise have been sent to landfill. The two main forms of waste I have used are glass (sand) and stone slurry. Not only does this reduce the need to mine for raw materials but also prevents any negative impact from transportation of materials.
Throughout this project I approached it like a science experiment, testing chemicals and reactions to find a way to show the beauty of waste. From this came the laboratory ware. Not only a representation of my testing process but also the glass that forms the main part of each glaze.
